The ER is designed for threats to life and limb. When it fills with cases a health center serves better, everyone slows down — you first, because your case will be graded "non-urgent" and wait long.

In short — what to do

  1. A cold, runny nose, and simple cough without breathing difficulty.
  2. Mild fever responding to medicine in an active child who drinks and plays.
  3. Chronic prescription refills (blood pressure, diabetes…).
  4. Chronic pain unchanged for weeks.
  5. Routine check-ups and medical certificates.

The full details

Examples the health center serves better

  • A cold, runny nose, and simple cough without breathing difficulty.
  • Mild fever responding to medicine in an active child who drinks and plays.
  • Chronic prescription refills (blood pressure, diabetes…).
  • Chronic pain unchanged for weeks.
  • Routine check-ups and medical certificates.

When IS the ER the right place?

  • Pressing chest pain, stroke signs, difficulty breathing.
  • Bleeding that doesn't stop with pressure, deep wounds, obvious fractures.
  • Poisoning, large burns, head injuries with vomiting or confusion.
  • Fever in a baby under 3 months, seizures, a rash that doesn't fade with pressure.
  • Sudden severe abdominal pain, or persistent vomiting.

The golden rule

If you're genuinely unsure and worried — come. The ER exists to reassure you, and the triage nurse will assess you quickly. This message is about better alternatives for clearly simple cases, not about closing the door.

Never postpone

  • Heart and brain symptoms are not tested at home "until morning" — see the chest pain and stroke guides.
